The Snug is a participatory design project exploring places of conversation in contemporary Ireland.
Led by international arts collective Unqualified Design Studio the project invited communities in Graiguecullen and Carlow Town to collaborate in the creation of a temporary space for conversation, as part of Carlow Arts Festival.
The Snug held a series of intimate conversations about place-making, architecture, and design – uncovering the elements that make a space ideal for the conversations that connect us.
Funded by The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, in partnership with Carlow Arts Festival and the Irish Architecture Foundation.

The Snug hosted a series of talks, workshops and music sessions centered around the ideas of place-making, community and conversation. Rather than talks or workshops in which there was a speaker and listners, these sessions were designed to be engaged with by any person who entered The Snug, making them a collective conversation where every voice is valuable.

As part of the narrative being woven through The Snug, we created a newspaper of "real, imagined and reimagined" news from the local area. The objective of the newspaper was to spark thoughtful conversation about possible futures and aid readers in imagining new and better ways to use community spaces to connect with one another.
While most of the articles were written by Heritage Consultant, Caitríona O'Connor, we used A.I. technology to generate imagery for the articles – allowing us to bring to life, visually, the imagined futures we spoke about.
